Green building

Day by day earth’s temperature is getting warmer and warmer. Everyone started to talk about going green. It’s time for everyone must start to follow green movement because the earth is not sustainable. i.e. we are running out of natural resources. We keep depleting natural resources, we are at the peak of warning stage.

A study conducted by International Water Management Institute shows total water demand will increase by 22 percentage by 2025 and 32 percent by 2050 in India. Previously the per capita water consumption was 135 lpcd (Litres per capita per day) and now it is increased to 200lpcd. United Nations Statistics says 0.3 percent of fresh water is available in the world. Already people in few cities like Chennai are facing thewater crisis. So, if environmental-friendly factors are considered right from the initial building stage, we may be able to sustain these natural resources.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings account for:

  • 36% of energy use
  • 65% of electricity consumption
  • 30% of raw materials use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste output
  • 12% of water consumption

An increase in the adoption of green building practices could reduce all these significantly.

Efficient green building accounts only for about 5% in India. Among all the cities selected under smart city development program, only Bhubaneshwar has shown actual commitment to creating housing infrastructure green.

What exactly is Green Building? Let’s take a closer look at it:

Green building, is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings uses energy, water, and materials, and of reducing impacts on human health and the environment for the entire life-cycle of a building.

Some people feel that they can’t go for green buildings because it will cost more money, but it is just a misconception. While it may cost you a bit more to install few smart technologies to get started but once you install, it will save you more money than you think for the full lifetime of the building. You can save more money in energy, thereby conserving energy. You also save environment which is a win-win situation!

Why Green Building:

According to the U.S Green Building Council(USGBC), buildings account for an average of 41% of the world’s energy use. Green buildings effectively use resources like energy, water, electricity reducing waste and pollution. Green buildings are built considering the building layout for adequate solar orientation and proper ventilation which in turn reduces the heat intake and maximises the glare-free daylight. They are also efficient in treating waste water and also the biodegradable waste. Bio-degradable waste and grey water waste are recycled and used to water and manure for plants and trees.

Benefits of Green Buildings :

  • Reduces wastage of water and material
  • Reduction in cost
  • Improve air and water quality
  • Conserve natural resources
  • Protect biodiversity
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Improve quality of life
  • Reducing the carbon footprint
  • Improve occupant health and comfort

As you can see green building are a lot beneficial to you and also to the environment. Green buildings is not an option anymore. Go green to bring positive changes in your life and also in the environment we live.
