Vastu Shastra also called the science of architecture, focuses on Indian architectural balances based on science.
Both of these practices have different histories, but their principles are similar. Before we dig in deep, it’s important to know the need for a good cosy sleep.
Importance of Sleep:
Sleep plays a crucial role in good health and well-being in your life. Getting better sleep at times can help with your mental and physical health.
We spend approximately one-third of our lives sleeping.Yes, you heard it right. We need good sleep for our body to function during waking hours. Research shows almost 60 percentages of adults don’t get enough sleep.
Let me give you some important reasons to get a good night sleep.
- Good sleepers tend to eat fewer calories
- Good sleep can maximize athletic performance
- Poor sleeping might increase the risk of heart disease and stroke
- Poor sleepers are linked to high body weight, increased inflammation and depression.
- Good sleep can improve concentration, productivity, immune function and also your mood.
Now you get a question, How many hours of sleep do I need?
According to the CDC(centre of disease control and prevention), the breakdown is as follows:
- Newborns (0–3 months): 14–17 hours
- Infants (4–12 months): 12–16 hours
- Toddler (1–2 years): 11–14 hours
- Preschool (3–5 years): 10–13 hours
- School-age (6–12 years): 9–12 hours
- Teen (13–18 years): 8–10 hours
- Adult (18–60 years): 7-plus hours
- Adult (61–64 years): 7–9 hours
- Adult (65+ years): 7–8 hours.
According to the Vastu Shastra, you should never sleep with your head facing north. We all may have heard this from our ancestors in India and like everyone, I also had a question in my mind,Is there any logic behind this or is it just another superstition? Well it’s not, read on to know why
When it comes to getting good sleep, we set the scene with darkening curtains, a lower room temperature, and other healthy habits.
One should never sleep with your head facing North:
Your sleep quality varies depending on sleeping with head in different directions.
Sleeping with your head in North direction is not recommended by Vastu Shastra.
In Hindu custom corpse waiting for cremation is laid down head facing North, this is because they believe North direction is the direction the soul takes when it leaves the body, so it is considered as an inappropriate direction to rest your head and sleep.
According to Vastu Shastra, if you sleep with your head to the north you may experience emotional instability, weak willpower and other illness.
Also if someone sleeps in this position they may face a major sickness and will remain sleep deprived.
Best direction to sleep scientifically:
You would have heard of the magnetic fields on earth,In many ways, the earth is engineered because of its magnetism.
While sleeping, your body is positioned horizontally, you can immediately make see that pulse rate drops. Our body automatically makes this adjustment because if blood is pumped at the same level, too much will go into your head, causing damage.
While sleeping if you place your head in the north direction and stay that way for 5 to 6 hours, the magnetic pull will cause pressure on your brain.
Beyond a certain age, your blood vessels will be weak and you might experience haemorrhages and paralytic strokes.
Or, if your system is sturdy and these things don’t happen to you, you could get up agitated because there is more circulation in the brain than normal while sleeping because of the magnetic fields.
This doesn’t mean that if you do this one day, you will fall dead.
But if you do this every day, this might happen. What kind of trouble you get depends on how strong your system is.
So, never sleep with your head pointing towards North direction.
Best direction to sleep scientifically is east.
Best sleeping position according to Feng Shui:
Feng Shui is more concerned with the elements in your space and their effects on chi (energy) flow more than the direction you sleep. They prefer southward energy, only because of China’s natural climate where you can experience warm winds from the south.
Feng Shui recommends a few tips to place your bed for better sleeping. Down below I have listed some important points.
- Place your bed in commanding position(You should be able to see the door when you are laying down in bed), you can use a mirror to find the exact position.
- Doors shouldn’t open up directly in line with the bed. If this happens according to Feng Shui you may experience a headache.
- Having your feet pointing straight out the door must be avoided.
- Have a solid wall behind the headboard of your bed for support is a must.
- Avoid keeping the bed and cot in the middle of the room.
- Avoid windows behind the head of the bed if it is possible.
- Avoid placing your bedboard on the other side of a toilet wall.
- For adults in the house, have space open on both sides of the bed.
- Avoid beams, soffits, and sloped ceilings above the bed, if it’s unavoidable, try covering them with fabric to reduce the impact.
Head in South:
According to Vastu Sastra sleeping with head towards South direction increases wealth, happiness and prosperity. The quality of sleep is best when you sleep in this position.
Sleeping in this position, you can get deep and heavy sleep.
As South direction is negatively charged and your head is positively charged, there will be an amicable attraction.
If you sleep with your head facing north direction energy will be pulled out whereas sleeping with your head pointing towards south draws energy into your body promoting health, happiness and prosperity.
If you have any sleep disorders try changing the direction of your head towards south and see what happens.
Head in East:
According to Vastu Sastra, sleeping with head in East direction increases memory, concentration, good health and inclination towards spirituality.
East is the best sleep direction, especially if you’re learning and it’s great for your memory power.
It is said to improve concentration, promote meditative sleep and very good health if you sleep with your head resting towards east direction.
Head in West:
Sleeping in the west is also favourable direction as per Vastu Shastra. This gives name, fame, reputation and prosperity. But sometimes sleeping west could give you an unsettled night sleep.
